In partnership with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), CAMBA’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) provides services to HPD Section 8 recipients. Core services include financial literacy; credit counseling and repair; counseling and case management; asset building; benefit and work support services; workforce development services, such as job training, job placement, and career counseling; family supports; peer and mentoring programs; life skills development; and education and training services. Our goal is to help participants achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. All FSS clients are eligible for an Independent Development Account (IDA) to encourage savings and promote employment. As a clients’ earnings increase, the extra money they pay in rent is put into escrow accounts by HPD on behalf of the clients. At the end of the program, the clients receive the money that has been saved on their behalf. They are encouraged to use this money to move toward homeownership, pay for education and/or training, or in other ways to enhance their overall self-sufficiency. Some clients are also eligible for the Work Rewards Program, which pays quarterly bonuses for continued employment. FSS was established in 2008 and currently serves 125 Section 8 tenants each year.
