Family Self Sufficiency

In partnership with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), CAMBA’s Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) provides services to HPD Section 8 recipients. Services include case management; workforce development services, such as job training, job placement and career counseling; financial management, etc. The goal of the program is to help participants achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. All FSS clients are eligible for an Independent Development Account (IDA) to encourage savings and promote employment. As clients’ earnings increase, the extra money they pay in rent is put into an escrow account by HPD on behalf of the client. At the end of the program, clients receive the money that has been saved on their behalf. They are encouraged to use this money to move toward homeownership, pay for education and/or training, or in other ways to enhance their overall self-sufficiency. Some clients are also eligible for the Work Rewards Program which pays bimonthly bonuses for continued employment.
