Started in the fall of 2006, CAMBA’s adolescent literacy program at the School for Democracy and Leadership provides twenty five middle school students with literacy instruction facilitated by our tutors in small group settings. In addition to the literacy instruction, which utilizes an innovative, research-based curriculum designed especially for use in after-school programs, students also participate in project-based club activities designed to improve their literacy skills in creative ways. Students choose the club they want to participate in and share what they have learned in their clubs at a Club Showcase. Families are invited to the Club Showcases and also to annual Family Nights where students and their families participate in typical adolescent literacy activities and share a catered meal together.
