CAMBA's school-based Beacon Community Center at I.S. 271 in Ocean Hill has been administered by CAMBA since 2000. The Beacon at I.S. 271 provides education, recreation, health information, youth development activities, leadership and social services to the children, youth and families of the community. There is an afterschool program for elementary and middle school youth as well as a summer camp for middle school and elementary school-aged youth. Evening activities include “books and basketball,” drumline, martial arts, GED prep and computer café. On Saturdays there is an award winning Archery program along with other offerings for the community. For the past two years, Beacon middle school students have participated in “Tribeca Teaches,” a program of the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and they have created their own short documentary films. The Beacon Center at I.S. 271 serves as a venue for community meetings, health fairs and other special events. The Beacon Community Center at I.S. 271 serves more than 1,200 youth, families and community members each year.
