School of Democracy & Leadership

Since 2006, CAMBA has been the lead community partner at the School for Democracy and Leadership (SDL), which was founded by New Visions for Public Schools. We are an active part of the school leadership.  Each week we meet with the Principal and the two Assistant Principals.  This School Cabinet conducts an ongoing examination of the quality of academic services and student progress.  We also focus on the students’ social and emotional needs.  As the lead partner, we are responsible for addressing the full needs of students and their families.  By meeting the service needs of families, we help to ensure that our students have the resources and supports they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.  We are also responsible for identifying new resources for SDL.  In this capacity, we have developed funding for adolescent literacy services, student counseling and support, and internship opportunities.  Those who are interested in donating to SDL can do so through CAMBA.

  • In November we partnered with senior class students of SDL and staff volunteers from Clifford Chance Law Firm in an event led by the youth service agency City Year...read more and see pictures.

The Fresh Air Fund

Since 2004, CAMBA has community partnered with The Fresh Air Fund and registered approximately 200 families a year and facilitated education about the fund’s free camps. The Fresh Air Fund partnership encourages any child in need of a vacation away from home and who will benefit from the program to participate. Two categories of summer camp are available: (1) Friendly Town children ages 6 through 12 go to a host family and (2) General camp for girls 8 through 12 and boys 8 through 15. There is a host of activities available for the children to enjoy such as swimming, computers, hiking, arts and crafts and much more. Children may be registered at CAMBA’s after-school program sites and at 885 Flatbush Avenue, 3rd floor.  www.freshair.org

Fiver Children’s Foundation

Fiver Children's Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization. Since 2003, the foundation has partnered year-round with CAMBA and 7 other community organizations/schools to develop life skills and empower children to become positive members of their community. Each year 8 and 9 year olds are selected to attend a tuition-free summer camp located in upstate New York. The selection is based upon the criteria of financial impoverishment and the demonstration of a dedicated work ethic as supported by teachers, school counselors and/or principals. At camp the children take part in activities and programs that include environmental education, swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding, field sports, conflict resolution through literacy and the visual and performing arts.
