Mental Health Coordinator, PS 306 Community School

PS 306 Ethan Allen Community School is as school based program that offers a strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of the schools. Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs. At the student level, Community Schools aim to increase student attendance, student engagement, development of social and emotional skills, and improve academic performance. At the school level, Community Schools aim to improve school culture, more actively engage families and provide seamless service delivery with partner organizations. ​

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

The person filling this position is expected, under general direction, to; (1) ensure the smooth day-to-day running, coordination and supervision of all program-related staff and services in accordance with all program goals, targets, and performance outcomes and all CAMBA and program policies, procedures, and protocols; and (2) counsel clients in dealing with such issues as: behavior, educational progress, family dynamics, mental and physical health, housing, personal finances, substance abuse, mental and/or physical trauma, domestic violence including the following: 

  • Maintain professional relationships with students and student confidentiality.
  • Practice Universal Precautions/Standard Protocol & Procedures.
  • Comply with any and all Federal, State, City and CAMBA security and privacy polices intended to protect the security and privacy of individually identifiable health information.
  • Persuade referred students to schedule initial appointment with program staff.
  • Review all documentation establishing student's eligibility for program.
  • Assist students in completing all CAMBA intake applications and forms.
  • Create and maintain student files and make file copies.
  • Conduct initial assessment of students and/or student's families.
  • In collaboration with students, prepare initial service plans, including short-term and long-term student goals.
  • Consult with others both inside and outside of CAMBA to determine causes of student problems and effect solutions.
  • With students and/or student families' agreement, arrange for medical, psychiatric, educational and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of student difficulties and indicate remedial measures.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) and two years of applicable experience and/or equivalent experience. Master of Social Work (MSW) degree or Mental Health Counselor (MHC) preferred. (A license is required of these Master's Degrees: Social Work (LMSW or LCSW), Mental Health Counseling, Counseling/Guidance, Art Therapy).

Other Requirements:

  • Must obtain Dept. of Education fingerprint clearance; doctor's note certifying good health; proof of negative results from TB test.
  • Ability to maintain fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment.
  • Supervisory experience a must.
  • Ability to adapt to the culture and environment of a public school.
