Who We Are: CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors and partners who work together to build an inclusive New York City, where all children and adults have access to the resources and supports they need to thrive.  We take a comprehensive approach by offering more than 160 integrated programs in:  Education & Youth Development, Family Support, Job Training & Employment Support Services, Health, Housing, and Legal Services. We reach more than 65,000 individuals and families each year at our 90 locations, including 20,000 youth.  CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Over 85% of our families are in living in poverty, reflecting the challenges faced by nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers today.    

Position: Counsel

Reports To: Executive Vice President and General Counsel

Location: 20 Snyder Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11226

What Counsel Does:  

Counsel is part of a 2-person team who, under general direction is expected to:

(1) Provide advice to CAMBA management and staff on a range of legal issues affecting daily operations; (2) Develop and manage internal processes, including contract management, corporate governance, compliance and records systems; (3) Review and comment on contracts from funders, and contracts with consultants, subcontractors, and vendors; (4) Provide advice on, research and provide legal updates on, various human resources/employment matters, and compliance policies and practices; and (5) Review and respond to records-related legal process.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from top tier law school.
  • New York State Bar membership.
  • 3 to 5 years of broad-based, hands-on legal experience.
  • Experience within a large not-for-profit organization or government agency preferred.
Other Requirements:
  • Knowledge of employment, labor, not-for-profit, corporate compliance matters a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a positive and respectful demeanor.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment, common sense and ability to work well with staff across the agency.
  • Willingness to learn and work in a wide range of areas.
  • Commitment to problem solve, efficiently, with sufficient attention to detail and strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Excellent analytical skills, particularly in cases of imperfect information.
  • Organized, meticulous, and reliable.
  • Ability to manage competing expectations, prioritize effectively and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also works well under instruction.
